Customers of Four Stars Engineering Systems GmbH demand cost-effective solutions to automate test systems for printed circuit boards. With the help of a low-cost articulated arm, Bernhard Driller and Seth Sheades are able to offer their customers exactly that: The RoboStar - a machine for automated electrical testing of printed circuit boards that rejects defective boards directly.
Bernhard Driller is CEO of Four Stars Engineering Systems GmbH, which specialises in the development of solutions for PCB production. With RoboStar, his company offers a Low Cost Robotics solution that enables cost-effective and fully automated quality inspection of printed circuit boards. In this interview, he talks about his reasons for using Low Cost Robotics and the benefits of automation.
Did you encounter any difficulties during the implementation with the help of robolink®? If so, what were they? We are a company that primarily deals with the electrical testing of printed circuit boards. Robotics was new to us and the project therefore involved many new tasks with a number of difficulties that had to be solved. The robolink® components actually caused the least problems.
What did you particularly like about the implementation with robolink®? Thanks to our own expertise, we are able to provide the entire motion control of a multi-axis system and extend it to a robot application. The mechanical interfaces of the robolink® joints allowed simple and fast integration together with our drives.
Did you combine the robot arm with your own components? If so, why? An important goal was that our automation should be able to handle PCBs with a wide variety of formats without an operator having to make any mechanical adjustments when changing formats. This initially led to the general decision that only a robot solution was an option. Furthermore, a universal, format-independent suction gripper was developed, which is manufactured using the 3D laser sintering process and can be easily connected to the robot.
In what ways do you benefit from automation today? With automation, we have an innovative product that will allow our company to grow in a new area over the next few years. Our customers benefit from the use of automation in electrical circuit board testing through greater effectiveness and, in particular, through increased safety by eliminating human error.
