What is a halogen-free cable? A halogen-free cable is a cable that does not contain any materials with elements from the halogen group. Halogens, such as chlorine, are excellent insulators as non-conductors and are therefore often used as sheathing materials for cables. The most common example of this is polyvinyl chloride (PVC). However, the use of halogens also harbours risks.
If a plastic containing halogens burns, these halogens are released from the jacket and get into the air we breathe. The combination with water produces an acid that is toxic to humans. The absence of halogens is therefore particularly important if the user has to pay special attention to the danger posed by a potential fire.
Particular attention should be paid to the use of halogen-free cables in applications with an increased risk of fire. If a cable is used where there is an increased risk of fire, the fact that it is halogen-free eliminates a risky source of danger. For this reason, specifications clearly stipulate that only halogen-free cables should be used for such applications.
Halogen-free cables are free of elements such as bromine, fluorine, iodine or chlorine, all of which are highly reactive. Compared to conventionally PVC-insulated cables, several advantages become apparent, particularly in the event of a fire. In the event of a fire, halogen-free cables do not release any toxic or corrosive gases that could pose a threat to people or buildings. In contrast to PVCcable, the dangerous release of halogen-containing fire gases can therefore be ruled out. Halogen-free cable can therefore be used at higher temperatures than PVC cable.
In addition to the halogen-containing PVC cable, igus® also uses halogen-free cables and cables with sheath materials made of PUR (polyurethane elastomers) and TPE (thermoplastic elastomers). These are manufactured in accordance with DIN EN 60754 and therefore fulfil the halogen-free requirements.
