The prototype of the "Sunseeker Duo" solar aeroplane is the world's first solar-powered two-seater. It has to be one thing above all: light. For this reason, every single component was carefully selected to achieve optimal technical specifications for optimum performance. The objective when designing the wing suspension was to find a connecting element that is easy to assemble. Instead of metal bearings, lightweight igubal® KGLM spherical plain bearings are used here. Further plastic bearings are used in the tailplane suspension and in the attachment of the flaps to the wings.
The SUNSEEKER II, in which Eric Raymond broke several world records, has been using plastic plain bearings since 2002. igus® drylin® bearings are used to support the dome, half of which slides open. Following their successful use, Eric Raymond now wants to boldly move forward with the use of solid plastic plain bearings. It can be assumed that a successful application will provide important impetus for aircraft construction.
