The Belgian company Innoptus Solar Team is building a solar car for the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia. The special feature: a retractable carbon aerofoil profile that generates additional thrust. It must be possible to retract the fin at any time, as the system is only advantageous when the wind is above a certain angle of attack to the car. For the mechanism, the designers use carbon fibre rods and a spindle with a dryspin® series trapezoidal nut as well as polymer plain bearings from igus®. The system is lightweight, resistant to rain, sand and dust and robust enough to withstand vibrations caused by aerodynamic forces.
"The collaboration with igus® went smoothly and included meetings, for which we are very grateful, as we were able to develop the system in several iterations in a limited time. Even now, as the system is still being further developed, igus® has met with the designers of the new iteration to work out improvements based on the experience with the system during the SASOL Solar Challenge in South Africa.
