The proportion of electronic and electromechanical components in vehicles has been growing steadily for years. Increased comfort and growing safety requirements are fuelling this development. The wiring harness, which is responsible for supplying all these components, is therefore the second heaviest component in many cars, right after the engine. Actuators make up a large proportion of the elements to be supplied with power and signals. These small units convert electrical signals and impulses into mechanical movements and are responsible, for example, for operating the throttle valve(s) when accelerating, automatically closing tailgates and doors or moving and positioning a seat. The areas of application are diverse and actuators can be found in all areas of the vehicle.
Gears with mostly complex geometries are used to transmit motion and force. In order to increase the efficiency of actuators and minimise noise, igus® has also been offering gears and gearing elements made of well-known and tribologically optimised iglidur® materials specially tested in the igus® laboratory since 2020.
Thanks to the innovative formulations of the iglidur® high-performance plastics, we achieve smoother running, lower torque and thus lower power consumption in the drive unit with improved material properties.
The aim is to eliminate the greases used in the assembly process. Failures due to missing, incorrectly dosed or flowing grease should be avoided. The manufacturing process of an actuator is simplified and more cost-effective.
Depending on the parameters prevailing in your application, we will advise you on the right material and tool technology to mould your individual gear (toothed component) in a reliable injection moulding process. We pay particular attention to achieving the required gearing quality, as this geometric feature, in addition to the material properties, determines the quality of the actuator, especially in terms of acoustics.
