AVG Köln mbH, operator of a modern residual waste incineration plant, has renewed the energy and signalling supply for a total of four bunker cranes. Roller energy chains from igus® are being used for this. The "Heavy Duty" chains, which travel with much less friction than sliding chains, require only around 25% of the usual drive power and work reliably even under the most adverse environmental conditions. The customer benefits from a reliable energy supply solution that was installed by igus® without interrupting ongoing operations.
"If we use other control systems in the future, for example, we can simply insert additional cables into the chain. That's not possible with the trailing cable. That's why only around 75% of the chains are equipped."
Dipl.-Ing. Oliver M. Hamm, Operations Engineer Electrical and Control Technology
The assembly of the four energy chain systems in the two bunkers proved to be a real challenge. Dieter Reitz: "As the plant is in continuous operation, there were only ever very short periods at the weekend when our fitters could work in close coordination with the shift management and under strict safety precautions." The material, which was initially stored on the bunker and brought in through a hatch, could therefore only be installed in short intervals. As a result, this work took around four weekends per crane and the chains did not have to be prefabricated in the factory. Dieter Reitz: "We had to proceed step by step and lay the chain first and then the cables - the entire system would have been too heavy and unwieldy to install in the bunker."
All in all, it was a logistical feat that the igus® fitters had to complete: "We laid 10.65 tonnes of troughs and 640 metres of cable tray. There are 26 kilometres of cable and 29,218 separators in the energy chain. We tightened 2,800 screws and clamped 4,474 cores."
