Screw drives from igus® ensure smooth running in innovative safety platforms in high-bay warehouses
High-bay warehouses are springing up like mushrooms. Maintaining them is often like walking a tightrope. A fall protection platform developed by MehrTec GmbH provides a remedy. Its centrepiece is a clamping mechanism for fixing the modules. It consists of lubrication-free trapezoidal threaded spindles in combination with cylindrical lead screw nuts. This system solution from igus® provides the necessary safety. Danger to life and limb is thus averted.
"The development of the fall protection platform goes back to a height rescue exercise in a high-bay warehouse," reports Dipl. Ing., Dipl. Wirtsch. Ing. Udo Adriany, Managing Partner of MehrTec GmbH in Müsch. "A few years ago, we simulated a situation where a worker wearing a safety harness had to be rescued from a great height in a high-bay warehouse. This took a total of 20 minutes, despite trained height rescuers. The consequences would have been fatal in reality. Due to the often underestimated suspension trauma, the blood circulation is interrupted by the weight in the leg area, unconsciousness occurs, the circulation collapses and, in the worst case, the employee dies after the rescue."
The legal basis is clear: the operators of high-bay warehouses are responsible for occupational safety. A solution therefore had to be developed to ensure greater safety when working at height, which is why the modular SRM safety platform for Euro pallet high-bay warehouses is used today.
Ready to use and ready to install
"The highlight of the platform is the clamping mechanism," explains Adriany. "The modules can be fixed in place at any position, both manually and automatically." This leads to a high degree of flexibility in day-to-day operations. Compared to a recirculating ball bearing guided system, the lubricant-free and maintenance-free solution from igus® is economical and also delivers the right performance. It is a special spindle machined from both sides with a simple transition point, a coupling, in the centre. The complete machining is carried out at igus® according to the corresponding specifications, so that the customer receives a finished system that can be installed immediately. The delivery time is between two and three weeks. All CAD data is provided by igus® so that the customer can enter it directly into their system.
"Although this is basically a mass-produced product, we were completely impressed by the conscientious processing," says Adriany. "Many additional steps that lead to unnecessary delays are completely eliminated for us." The collaboration between the two companies is exceptionally good. "You can rely on all technical statements. The respective contacts in the office and in the field are competent and reliable," confirms the managing partner.
Around 50 RBG safety platforms are already proving their functionality in the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries as well as in mechanical and plant engineering.
Presented for the first time this year at Logimat, demand is constantly increasing. The TÜV and the BGHW trade association have also confirmed that the RBG safety platform fulfils the technical rules for operational safety, the guidelines for equipment and systems for racking operation and even the strict regulations of the Industrial Safety Ordinance.
Warehouse downtime is expensive. A food discounter, for example, insists on punctual delivery. Safety platforms play an important role in minimising downtimes and increasing work safety in high-bay warehouses. They can save lives. Maintenance and lubrication-free linear technology from igus® makes an important contribution in this environment to guarantee long-term functionality and safe and fast working.
