Direct drive technology is an important component in automation today. Linear motor axes for high-end positioning are becoming increasingly popular. The highly complex technology requires detailed technical advice in advance for every application and correspondingly robust components for the design. Energy supply systems and cables, for example, must guarantee a long service life despite extreme accelerations. After several years of co-operation with the automation expert HIWIN, the results are positive.
Pipe-cutting machine, inspection machine, welding machine: Application areas of linear motors in detail
These three examples show that linear motors can be used in a wide range of applications: A customer from the automotive industry wanted to cut stainless steel tubes with holes. For optical reasons, the cut should not go through a hole, but between two holes, which is done with the help of a camera. The tube is positioned using a camera. The actual position is transmitted in the 50 microsecond range. The axis positions to 2 µ in 3.5 m/s; the acceleration is in the 2 g range. Accuracy, dynamics and a high number of cycles were the design challenge. The entire system with energy supply and cable runs practically wear-free - despite the high amount of swarf.
Other applications are in wafer quality control. Here, high-precision XY tables with air bearings are used in the cleanroom as a prerequisite for surface inspection. An air bearing table moves here with an accuracy of half a micron. Or in a horizontal high-speed heating element welding machine for welding plastics: Linear axes with absolute position measurement are also used here. The pipes are pressed against the heating plates. If too much pressure is applied, the bead becomes too strong; if too little pressure is applied, there is no hold. This means that force-controlled pressure must be applied without 'string pulling'. The combination of dynamics and force control is another argument in favour of linear motors.
