"In October 1988, igus® acquired a 40,000m2 plot of land in Porz-Lind, Cologne. This is where development, production, sales, administration and planning are to take place. This is where all activities are to be centred, this is where igus® is to have its headquarters. igus® has prepared itself for rapid growth and rapid changes - flexibility - in all areas for the future, while at the same time constantly consolidating the overall company situation. The new "igus® factory" is intended to provide the spatial and technical possibilities for this, and its design should be conducive to the requirements and needs of the employees. It should reflect the products and the core principle of the corporate philosophy both inside and out: Innovation - Service - Reliability - with the customer as the centre of a solar system that all igus® employees and igus® instances orbit to solve their problems."
This small extension from Günter Blase's briefing to Nicholas Grimshaw was the basis for the following sketch. This was further developed into the model shown, which was then realised as a factory building.
igus® has continued to grow strongly in recent years and is showing great development. We are expanding our factory with a new building to accommodate future growth and to fulfil our customers' wishes quickly and reliably. This is currently being built opposite the main building on the other side of Frankfurter Strasse, on 20,000 m². From autumn 2023, parts of production as well as office space will find a new home here.
The new building will continue the concept of the existing factory and the former architect Nicholas Grimshaw and will be flexible on the inside. One of the two founders of the planning architecture firm Bryden Wood, Mark Bryden, had already worked on the first factory together with Nicholas Grimshaw - in other words, the best prerequisites.
