- connectors are fitted with contact pins that fit snugly into the openings of the sockets and thus transmit the flow of electric current or light waves. Connectors that are part of devices are referred to as built-in connectors.

- Signal connectors are used to forward information, data and signals
- Sockets at the end of a cable are also called couplings.
SUB-D connectors are used for data transmission. The term is derived from the English word D-Subminiature. Sometimes these industrial connectors are also called D-SUB connectors. The D stands for the outer shape of the connectors and bushes, which forms a trapezoid with rounded corners. This shape ensures that they cannot be put together the wrong way round by mistake.
