With the SIMone birth simulator, 3B Scientific GmbH has an important tool for training gynaecologists and midwives in its range. The mechatronic "inner workings" are complex: the force, moments, direction and path used by the obstetrician to help the plastic foetus out of the womb are precisely recorded. Maintenance- and lubrication-free linear bearings and threaded spindles from igus® contribute to an optimally simulated birth process.
The birth is imminent. The contractions are irregular, the blood pressure of the lead screw nut is rising alarmingly. Various scenarios are now possible: administration of medication, caesarean section, intervention with forceps or suction cup... An experienced gynaecologist or a well-trained midwife makes the right decisions in such a situation. But how does a medical student learn what to do when training to become a specialist?

Metallic lead screw nuts are still standard in medical technology. However, most of them require regular lubrication and maintenance. Dust and dirt particles can adhere well to the lubrication used. This leads to considerable contamination and significantly higher wear compared to a dry-running system. In addition, the metallic lead screw nut can corrode quickly in humid environments.
