Sustainable energy supply for the harbours of the future
Until now, ocean-going vessels have had to keep their diesel engines running to be supplied with electricity while they are berthed in harbours, resulting in high levels of pollutant and noise emissions. Shore power supply enables ships to dispense with diesel-powered engines during cargo handling and instead connect to the local power grid. Our customised energy routing systems for shore power supply make it possible to route the electrical power supply in the form of power lines to the shore power system, where they are needed to connect to the ship lying on its side. Our solutions for shore power supply help to...
Every harbour is unique. Tidal behaviour, terminal designs and equipment differ from port to port. Ships equipped for shore power have a cable drum on board that allows two cables with connectors to be lowered onto the quay. These can then be connected to sockets on the quay. There are three conditions for finding the optimum location for a fixed socket:
1. deviation of shore power locations from ships
2. onboard CMS restrictions
3. flexibility of the berth arrangement
The self-propelled iMSPO system from igus provides the solution. It is able to provide a shore-side power outlet for the ship's cables wherever it is needed along the berth up to a distance of 400m and more.
Connection solutions - offshore and LNG terminals
Offshore terminals and ships place high demands on the flexibility and reliability of energy chain solutions, especially in extreme weather conditions and with changing berthing positions. LNG terminals require robust and low-maintenance shore power solutions that can cope with the challenges of long distances, harsh environmental conditions and constant operational readiness, for which OSC energy supply is ideal. Both areas require systems that can compensate for movements due to tides, wind and waves and implement emergency mechanisms. Such a system can also be found in our user report on the FSU in Bahrain.
We test our Shore Power systems for you under real conditions and in all weathers in our in-house test laboratory. Around a third of our 4,000 m² test laboratory for every industry is located outside at the igus headquarters® in Cologne. This is where our energy chain systems for shore power supply and offshore applications are tested for their suitability in wind and weather - both on long travel paths and vertically on test towers.
