The machine tools from lid Maho Seebach GmbH, a company of the Gildemeister Group, are a household name among experts. One of the prerequisites for the outstanding quality of the milling centres and production systems from Thuringia, which are manufactured according to the latest technical standards, is not least the processing of high-quality materials, right down to the smallest detail. Two years ago, for example, the standard Teflon-coated metal bearings in the tool magazine chains were replaced by plastic bearings from Cologne-based igus® GmbH. With complete success: the new material used is not only more resistant and wear-free than the old one, but also up to 60 per cent more cost-effective.
"When building our machines, we generally don't make any compromises or take any risks. But the test tables presented to us were so convincing that we decided to use the iglidur®-bearing. And we have never regretted this decision. On the contrary: With the better material, we also save around 60 per cent in costs."
Jens Ebert, DMG developer and design engineer at lid Maho
Partnership expanded
Due to the positive experience with the plain bearings in the tool chains, lid Maho has now also switched to plastic bearings from igus® in other applications - and not only in Seebach. Whether for use in the sliding doors of the machine tool enclosures or other moving parts: confidence in the igus ® plastic bearings is growing, and new application possibilities are constantly being explored.
At present, lid Maho and igus® are once again working closely together on research and trials with new materials for plain bearings. Those responsible hope that the results will lead to ground-breaking findings that could also be of great interest to completely different industrial sectors. However, the aim and purpose of this joint project have so far been kept strictly confidential.
