Avoiding CO2emissions is an important concern for us and we are pursuing the goal of being CO2 neutral with our buildings and production by 2025. In order to bind existing CO2 through more tree areas, igus® is involved in reforestation initiatives worldwide, which we present to you on this page. Since 2019, we have planted a total of 76,280 trees:
November 2023 | igus® Indonesia has planted mangrove trees on the coast of Pondok Bali Beach in Mayangan, Legonkulon district. A total of 800 tree seedlings were brought to the bird island to be planted there. The planting campaign was accompanied by employees of igus® Indonesia and went smoothly. The campaign serves to protect against deforestation, absorb carbon dioxide and maintain water and air quality.
November 2023 | In order to further reduceCO2 emissionsand get closer to our goal ofCO2 neutrality, we actively support tree planting projects around the world. For example, igus® China launched a new project in Yanling County with a ground-breaking ceremony at the end of November: All kinds of large and small trees are being planted on more than 100 hectares of barren mountains to revitalise the landscape. A total of 8,220 trees will be planted here by the end of January 2024.
October 2023 | For the past two years, igus® Malaysia and igus® Singapore have been planting trees on behalf of their customers. During this time, over 150 trees have been planted for urban reforestation in Singapore and the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, helping to restore and reconnect forest corridors for wildlife. The partner of the tree planting initiative is APE Malaysia, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the protection of orangutans and their habitat in the Borneo rainforest. Under the name ROAR (Restore Our Amazing Rainforest), APE Malaysia works closely with local communities. They are directly involved in the programme by planting and caring for the seedlings. In this way, the programme also contributes to improving their living conditions.
August 2023 | This year, we are once again supporting the German Forest Protection Association on our doorstep. In March 2023, sessile oaks and beeches, wild cherries, winter lime trees and hazel trees were planted in Lindlar, along with 100 wild apples and 350 different shrub species at the edge of the forest, totalling 5,000 plants. As is usual in the Rhineland, there are several small areas that are part of a forestry association and are managed by the state forestry administration. We were on site in August and were delighted to see how well the plants were taking off, such as the tree hazel, which is rather unknown in Germany. There is still some pruning work to be done in autumn so that the ferns and brambles, which have grown well in the recent wet weather, do not overgrow the young plants.
February 2023 | At igus® China, sustainability and climate protection are deeply rooted in the corporate philosophy. Our Chinese subsidiary has completed a large tree planting project in Maotang Town, Lianyuan City. A total of 20,300 trees were planted here in 5 stages from mid-November 2022 to early January 2023. The project has now been approved by employees of the city and we are delighted to be working together to strengthen the forestry sector in the region.
February 2023 | The main planting of the seedling line on the research area between Berlin and Frankfurt Oder began with a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony at the end of 2022. A forest of 40 different tree species is being created here on a 100,000 m² area of arable land; climate-stable German tree species are being combined with trees from drier regions to find out which tree species can optimally adapt to climate change. Climate forester Jan Borchert from PLANTED proudly told us about the progress of the project. Together with him and all those involved, we are excited to see what the area will look like when the first trees sprout in spring.
January 2023 | The igus® branch in the USA has partnered with the National Forest Foundation and its project "50 million for our forests". The NFF supports restoration and community engagement in National Forests across the U.S. As part of the partnership with the NFF, igus® has committed to planting 10,000 trees by the end of 2023. This commitment is part of the company's commitment to reduce its own environmental impact.
October 2022 | igus® Switzerland made a sustainable contribution to voluntary climate protection in October and supported the regional forest management project "Bucheggberg with a donation. Within this project, measures are being implemented in the areas of climate-optimised forest management and biodiversity. Specifically, the use of wood is optimised, i.e. more tree biomass is left in the forest, and resistant trees such as oak are selected for new plantings, which can also cope with higher temperatures and drought. This contribution will offset 15 tonnes ofCO2, which corresponds to planting around 1,200 trees.
October 2022 | Wald4Leben is the name of the organisation that is reforesting woodland in northern Lower Austria in the middle of organically managed agricultural land. Its goal: climate protection for all. Supporting reforestation projects is made easy here. Our branch in Austria has chosen Wald4Leben to make its contribution to active climate protection. 90 coniferous and deciduous trees will be planted in the Ziernreith project area over the course of the year.
September 2022 | After some delays due to the effects of COVID19, the colleagues from Indonesia were finally able to plant the 200 trees that had been planned for some time in mid-September. The planting took place in West Java and was carried out by igus® employees and the West Java Conservation Trust Fund under the cable of WANANDRI (mountain and jungle protection). The special thing about this tree donation is that it also creates jobs for the villagers: from growing suitable seedlings to helping with the correct planting and further care of the trees until they are three years old.
September 2022 | A partnership between the company PLANTED, Eberswalde University of Applied Sciences and a cooperative from Brandenburg is transforming a 100,000 m² field between Berlin and Frankfurt Oder into a forest test laboratory. Several 10,000 trees from 40 different species will be planted, combining tried and tested climate-stable German trees with those from drier regions of the world. The aim is to find out which tree species can optimally adapt to climate change and where symbioses can be created. The first rows were divided up in September and some black walnut seedlings have already been planted as a test. The main planting will take place in October and November. We are supporting the lighthouse project with 5,000 trees and are looking forward to updates.
September 2022 | Our branch in Poland is committed to restoring forests in various regions of Poland. In spring 2022, 1,000 trees were planted on behalf of igus®. In autumn 2022, 2,000 more trees will be added, namely pines, birches, oaks, rowan trees and hornbeams. The tree planting campaigns are being coordinated and carried out by the Posadzimy company. The special thing here is that a user-friendly system makes it very easy to plant trees at the click of a button. The suitable land, permits and planting are all taken care of here. This makes it even easier to do good.
September 2022 | At the end of 2021, we reforested an area of almost 10,000m2 together with the German Forest Protection Association and the municipality of Lindlar. In addition to copper beeches and oaks, the future forest edges in particular were planted with snowball, hawthorn, blackthorn and black elder. Despite the extremely hot and, above all, dry summer, the planting looks good and most of the trees are thriving. To make sure it stays that way, pruning work is still needed this autumn to prevent brambles and ferns from overgrowing the young trees.
August 2022 | As part of its social commitment programme, igus® Thailand has laid the foundation for a new forest in Sirindhorn International Environmental Park, Phetchaburi: 200 trees were planted on 20 August. The colleagues also received certificates for their planted trees and enjoyed a day spent together in nature.
July 2022 | Our Central American subsidiary in Mexico has combined the useful with the pleasant: An hour and a half away from the office, in the district of Amanalco, a team of 8 employees planted 500 trees together with 12 people from the district. With refreshments, lunch and a themed shirt, they also turned it into a team event and enjoyed the time together away from their desks and in nature. This was the second planting campaign that igus® Mexico has organised.
May 2022 | igus® Canada has teamed up with Trees Canada to plant 1,000 trees in Ontario's Cataraqui Conservation along the St. Lawrence River as part of the National Greening Programme. A total of 30,000 trees will be planted as part of the reforestation project. The aim is to reforest the area in 2022, reduce soil erosion and restore the tree canopy.
May 2022 | Colleagues from the Spanish igus® branch organised a planting event in Valdecans in the province of Barcelona. Together with the Sèlvans association and in collaboration with Volterra Ecosystems and the city council of Valdecans, a professional planting day took place in the Parc de la Marina. 2 stone pines and hundreds of aromatic herbs of rosemary, sage, lavender, thyme and oregano were planted. The existing drip irrigation pipes were also reworked.
April 2022 | Together with the Cologne Green Foundation, we planted 9 young trees in the Kalk district of Cologne. The old Kalk cemetery was redesigned after it was no longer used as a cemetery and now serves as a park for local recreation. Around 50 gravestones, a war memorial and the enclosure wall still remain from the original cemetery. Paths have been laid out and benches installed. The new trees now line one such path.
March 2022 | igus® Brazil has received a certificate as a forest-friendly company. The reason: a donation of 1,000 seedlings of native trees that will bind 140 tonnes ofCO2. The seedlings were planted in the municipality of Martinópolis in the state of São Paulo by the Brazilian Forest Institute (Instituto Brasileiro de Florestas). After planting, the organisation will now monitor and care for the area for the next two years to ensure that the seedlings grow healthily until they are fully developed.
January 2022 | Obstarche Reddelich in the district of Rostock is an association dedicated to the preservation of old fruit varieties. From 2015 to 2021, 800 young fruit trees were planted on a meadow orchard and are part of the fruit nature trail in Reddelich. Caring for them and bringing in a rich harvest requires a lot of effort and money. That is why we are not planting them ourselves for once, but are supporting the association with financial resources in 2022. This money will be used to buy cuffs to protect the young trunks from mice and mowing damage, robinia wood stakes for storm-proof connections, mowing twine and petrol to mow the areas around the trunks and compost and fertiliser for healthy growth.
The colleagues from the Belgian branch have joined the project of the Royal Belgian Forestry Society and planted 200 trees for the reforestation of a 1.2 hectare area in Vaux sur Sûre. The spruce trees that previously stood on this area did not survive the bark beetle infestation and were replaced by three species of larch (Larix decidua, Larix kaempferi and Larix Eurolepis), beech (Fagus sylvitica) and red oak (Quercus rubra). They also support the research project "Trees for the Future". This project aims to open up the "field of possibilities" by investigating forest species and provenances that can help forests adapt to climate change.
December 2021 | Our French colleagues are also committed to more green andCO2 neutrality. For every online order with a value of over 400 euros, igus® France donates a tree for reforestation in French forests. The first tree planting campaign was launched in winter, organised by Ecotree, a provider committed to sustainable forestry in France: 250 young trees of the Thuja and Corsican pine varieties will now enrich the forests of the departments of Luthenay and Gourin. Further planting campaigns are planned in France for 2022.
December 2021 | The city of Bergisch Gladbach is planting almost 2,400 trees with us. In Herrenstrunden in particular, where the bark beetle has caused extensive damage, a new, climate-stable mixed forest will grow. The existing sycamore maple young growth will be joined by wild service trees and winter lime trees, which have only rarely been found in the Bergisches Land up to now. They are optimally adapted to the location and will be an important source of food for bees and other insects thanks to their high nectar supply.
In addition, the existing forest at various locations in the Bergisch Gladbach urban area will be made fit for the future by underplanting.
December 2021 | Together with the German Forest Protection Association, a total of 5,000 new trees will be planted on an area of 9,632 m² between Schwarzenbachstrasse and the cycle path. The planting will take place in spring 2022.
November 2021 | "igus® igreen - grow together": Under this motto, twelve of our Thai colleagues set off to a park in Phetchaburi to get waist-deep in the water and plant mangroves. By the end of the day, 120 young trees had been given a new home and will hopefully continue to grow for a long time to come. The population of mangrove forests has been decimated in recent decades, a tremendous loss for people and nature. The trees are not only among the largest carbon stores in the tropics. They also harbour a great diversity of species and are nurseries for fish, crustaceans, birds and mammals. As a natural protective barrier against soil erosion and flooding, they are also essential for coastal protection. Reforestation projects are now underway to make up for the loss to some extent.
November 2021 | Near the Slovenian town of Kranj, where our dealer partner HENNLICH is based, there is a forest that was partially destroyed by a storm two years ago. The HENNLICH colleagues made their way there and reforested an area called Sorško polje. Under the supervision of the forester, the task was to prepare seedlings for planting, dig planting pits and set stakes to protect the young trees. 200 new spruce and oak trees will now continue to grow and help to protect the groundwater and prevent soil erosion in the surrounding fields. A further 12 seedlings have found a place to grow on a road at the eastern entrance to Kranj. HENNLICH donated around a quarter of the trees to this year's participants in the manus® competition in Slovenia, who are now tree sponsors.
November 2021 | igus® Italy is planting a total of 700 fruit trees in collaboration with the ZeroCO2 organisation. 200 of them will grow in Italy and 500 in El Petén in north-west Guatemala, a region particularly affected by deforestation and poverty. The donation not only has an ecological impact here, but also a social one, as the fruit trees are donated to disadvantaged farming families. They also receive long-term support and training on how to secure good harvests with environmentally friendly farming concepts, while at the same time restoring the soil and protecting the environment.
October 2021 | Our team at igus® Taiwan recently donated 2,200 trees to the National Taiwan University Research and Experimental Forest. 1,100 cedars and 1,100 incense cedars were planted on a total area of 1.5 hectares in Lugu, a city where the university maintains one of its experimental forests. These forests cover around 1% of the Taiwanese island and contain five different climate zones. A small group of our colleagues (a larger group was not permitted) was on site and lent a hand in planting the trees. Watch the video for impressions of this wonderful event.
Summer 2021 | Planting over one million new trees in the next 10 years - that is the goal of the OneMillionTrees campaign by NParks, a government organisation that is committed to increasing biodiversity in Singapore's urban landscape. Over 8 million trees are to grow in Singapore in streets, gardens, parks and nature reserves.
The team from igus® Singapore wants to be part of this campaign and is starting with a donation of 12 trees.
July 2021 | Our colleagues from igus® Mexico took part in a reforestation campaign in Sierra Morelos (Toluca). The park is only a few kilometres away from the igus® office - a good opportunity to roll up our sleeves and lend a hand. A total of 500 trees were planted, 100 of which were planted by our colleagues and their families. The park is planning further initiatives soon, also to secure the necessary work so that the trees can now grow healthily. The igus® Mexico team will be there!
April 2021 | Arbor Day has been the official American holiday for trees since the end of the 19th century. Every year on the last Friday in April, the importance of trees is celebrated and honoured in words and deeds.
The holiday also has a long tradition in Rhode Island. In addition to a programme of speeches and awards, the official celebrations always include a tree planting campaign, and this year was no exception: 15 new evergreen trees will thrive and provide shade in North Hull Street Park in future. igus® was involved as a sponsor of the event this time and was rewarded with a plaque of honour.
March 2021 | igus® Turkey is donating a total of 1,000 trees to its customers and business partners in 2021. They all receive a certificate with the details of the tree planted in the name of their company. The first 290 seedlings were planted in March in the reforestation project in the Elazig region. "Thank you for the sensitive and thoughtful campaign", "Excellent campaign, thank you and congratulations", "Thank you for the great campaign and the sensitive approach to the environment" are just some of the many positive reactions received after the certificates were handed over.
Autumn 2020 | Slowly but steadily, the new forest in Leukersdorf in the Saxon Ore Mountains is growing. One and a half years after the tree seedlings were planted, it now looks like the picture.
Summer 2020 | Together with the Sankalp Taru Foundation, we have launched a planting project to create more biodiversity, greater soil stability and a stable groundwater table in the region around Mahabalipuram.
3,000 young trees have been planted on an area of 2 hectares - a total of 14 different species, including medicinal, fruit-bearing and shade-giving plants. Over the next 35 years, they will be able to produce around 15,120 tonnes of oxygen, bind 2,520 tonnes ofCO2 and filter 7,255,080,000 litres of water. Careful monitoring and care of the plant sites ensures that over 95% of the seedlings survive.
Spring 2020 | One year after the planting campaign near Leukersdorf, another mixed forest is being created in the Ore Mountains, this time around 60 kilometres further east near the spa town of Seiffen. The 2,700 trees donated by igus® are native and site-appropriate deciduous trees such as copper beech, English oak, sycamore maple and small-leaved lime. Covering an area of 0.7 hectares, they will bind around 350 tonnes ofCO2 over the next 50 years, create new habitats for numerous animal species and provide recreational space for people.
Spring 2019 | Together with two school classes, we planted a new mixed forest near the village of Leukersdorf, not far from Chemnitz. An area of 0.65 hectares is now home to 2,500 trees donated by igus® of various native species such as English oak, small-leaved lime, red alder and larch. They will bind around 325 tonnes of CO2 over the next 50 years.
As well as protecting the atmosphere, the forest will provide a new habitat for birds and insects and make an important contribution to protecting against flooding.
