Mountain bike derailleurs are exposed to the highest loads. Whether mud, dust, water or a combination of all of these - the environmental influences on the world's trails are extreme. In addition, there are root carpets, blocked passages, berms and steep turns. And what would a really nice single trail be without airtime? Exactly: boring! So there are also plenty of jumps. When you press the gear lever, you naturally expect the chain to land in the right cassette sprocket as quickly as possible. This is exactly where the iglidur ® G plastic plain bearings from igus® come into play, because the rear derailleur has to move extremely precisely and quickly to the correct position in order to change gear. This is done by moving the guide roller of the mountain bike rear derailleur to the correct position using a parallelogram mechanism.
As the sprockets of the cassette are arranged very closely side by side, especially with a 12-speed drivetrain such as SRAM's Eagle drivetrains, the rear derailleur must be in exactly the right position. Even small deviations could otherwise result in chain noise. The fact that the chain no longer runs precisely on the sprockets also results in increased wear of the chain and cassette. In the worst case, the chain could even jump onto the wrong sprocket. SRAM derailleurs are fitted with iglidur ® G plastic plain bearings from igus® at all pivot points to ensure this precision.
The plain bearings from igus® have a number of advantages over direct bearings in plastic, aluminium or brass bushings: they require no external lubrication and are resistant to dirt, sand, dust, oil and water, plus they are unbeatably light. In contrast to the old bushing solution, the igus® bearings enable high precision with extremely low friction, which makes them virtually indestructible when used on the rear derailleur. The economic efficiency is mainly determined by the long service life of the bearings, which can be calculated using our online tool. As the igus® bearings do not need to be lubricated, there is also no need for bearing maintenance, which is otherwise quite difficult at this point. And the bearings are of course absolutely rust-free. So you can shred through mud and sludge in the worst rain without having to worry about damaging the bearings on the rear derailleur. Here you can already see how practical our bearings are when they are used on the rear derailleur.
Of course, the rear derailleurs on racing bikes are also subjected to high loads. Whether at one of the three major national tours, the Giro, the Tour de France or the Vuelta, at one of the five cycling monuments or at major events such as the Olympics or world championships - professional cyclists must be able to rely on their components. That's why SRAM relies on igus® bearings here too. As with the MTB derailleurs, these bearings are convincing due to the elimination of lubricants, the associated freedom from maintenance, the low weight and the long service life. This means that both professionals and amateur athletes can conquer the steepest ramps and the most beautiful serpentines.
