corrugated tube e-skin® is a corrugated tube consisting of an upper and lower shell that is completely closed when plugged together. The simple and reclosable opening mechanism enables uncomplicated maintenance and inspection of the cables used. e-skin® therefore offers a number of advantages over conventional corrugated tubes and is available in three versions:

Adhesive dispenser for camera modules

Customer requirements: Mingseal produces products for the 3C industry (computer, communication and consumer electronics). The main product is an adhesive dispenser for camera modules. In the past, igus® energy chain systems E3 and E6, which are already suitable for ISO class 1 according to IPA, were used as the energy supply. Nowadays, however, the market demands even greater freedom from particles (and therefore theoretically an even better ISO class) than before, especially for mobile phone camera modules. The reason for this is the ever-increasing number of pixels in mobile phone cameras, because if there is just one particle on these modules, the entire module is abandoned and the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and the yield (YIELD) of the system drop enormously.

Our solutions: In the first step, the customer had to replace the energy chain with other products such as welded cleanroom ribbon cables. The disadvantages of this solution soon became apparent: on the one hand, the welded ribbon cables could not be opened to add or replace cables and, on the other hand, the cables broke very quickly because they had to support themselves. After just six months, the first defects appeared on these welded cables, which in turn led to system downtime. The igus® cleanroom-energy supply e-skin® convinced the engineers at Mingseal. The unique corrugated tube for cleanrooms, consisting of an upper and lower shell, combined the requirements of the engineers with regard to openability, inherent rigidity, compactness and, of course, the highest cleanroom suitability according to ISO class 1. The compact e-skin® series SKS20 will be installed in new machines in the future.

The innovation

corrugated tube e-skin® is available in a closed version and a version with chambers that can be opened individually. This flexibility is unique on the market to date and is an innovation. e-skin® also has sufficient inherent rigidity and a defined bend radius (55 to 100 mm).

The oval geometry ensures lateral stability. This means that short unsupported lengths are possible, even where installation space is limited. Conventional corrugated hoses do not offer this option. The energy supply is also quiet. It has a noise level of just 29 dB (A) and is therefore 5 dB (A) quieter than standard clean cables on the market.

Quality from the igus® cleanroom laboratory

The new igus® cleanroom laboratory was built by the Fraunhofer IPA for the rapid development of particle-free motion plastic, which is suitable for cleanrooms up to air cleanliness class 1 in accordance with ISO 14644-1.

Endurance test

The e-skin® has been specially developed for cleanroom applications. In the laboratory, it withstood more than 6.4 million double strokes at 3 m/s trade show under realistic conditions.

Bending test

The standard bending test shows how flexible the e-skin® soft is. It only bends, even under loads at which other energy chains would already break.

Sound measurement

This test shows how quiet corrugated conduits e-skin® and cleanroom flat cables e-skin® flat are. Compared to flat ribbon cables from competitors, the e-skin® flat only has a volume of 29 dB(A).
