High transmission rates of up to 100 Mbit/s place high demands on the cable structure and materials. The use of the cable in e-chain® places additional stress on the materials and leads to lasting changes in the electrical specification. A CF14.02.04.02.CAT5 for high transmission rates was selected as the cable to be analysed. The cable should fulfil the electrical requirements of IEC 61156-6 even when stressed with the minimum bending radius. 4 pairs of wires are stranded together in the CF14.02.04.02.CAT5 cable, each of which has a nominal cross-section of 0.25 mm2. The conductor consists of bare copper wires and is surrounded by a jacket made of foamed PE.

The aim is to analyse whether the cable complies with the limit values of the IEC standard after bending stress.
Maximum values for individual attenuation are specified in DIN IEC 61156-6 for each pair of cores for the corresponding nominal characteristic impedance in dB/100 m. The attenuation, as a measure of the reduction of the transmitted electrical energy of a signal on the cable, remains below the prescribed limit value even after more than 1.5 million double strokes under stress of the minimum bending radius. the characteristic electrical transmission parameters such as characteristic wave impedance, return loss and near-end crosstalk are fulfilled, so that the electrical values of the IEC standard for a category 5 cable are complied with despite high mechanical stress.
This test, along with others, is the basis for the standard guarantee of up to 10 million cycles stated in the catalogue.
