Huisman, based in the Netherlands, specialises in the construction and maintenance of heavy construction machinery worldwide, e.g. for the renewable energy and oil production sectors.
One such "machine" from Huisman, the so-called Multi Purpose Tower, is used on drilling ships to perform the same functions as a conventional drilling rig. The huge scaffolding, which is used to guide the drill pipe and house other machinery, protrudes conspicuously from the ship due to its height. Due to its exposed position, the cable faced several challenges, e.g. for the energy supply and cable routing. Not only does this result in an enormous travelling length, which is associated with a high cable weight. The use on the high seas in rough winds also means that all cables must be routed safely and well protected.

To safely route the various cables and hoses for supplying the multi-purpose tower, the manufacturer has opted for a particularly robust plastic energy chain from our E4.1 series. The E4.1 is also very compact robust - although this application is hardly small. This is because the travel on the derrick is a full 40 metres. The comparative lightness of the plastic chain contributes to the low overall weight of the system, whereby no compromises had to be made in terms of the safety of the cable routing. Even under strong wind loads, the energy chain, which is safely guided in a channel system, reliably and perfectly guides all cables and hoses of the multi-purpose tower.
