With the TBA 440 M2 deep drilling system, Bauer Maschinen GmbH has developed a system that can drill holes to a depth of 6,000 metres largely automatically and, as a "walking unit" with a total weight of around 1,000 tonnes, is even able to change location. The handling system that feeds the drill rods is supplied with hydraulic and electrical energy as well as control signals via our E4.1-energy chain.
igus® supported the development of the pipe handler at two locations: In addition to the Schrobenhausen site, Bauer's sister company Schachtbau Nordhausen was also involved in the development. From Bauer's point of view, the early involvement of the energy supply specialists offered the advantage that a space-saving, robust and reliable energy supply system is used, which consists of components from the igus® standard modular system. Special, reinforced guide plates are used for some of the energy chains. Overall, the entire construction - not just the energy supply, but the entire system - is designed to achieve a very high service life under extreme conditions with minimum maintenance. The E4.1 energy chain fits perfectly into this concept. Bauer has completed an extensive test programme with the TBA 440 M2 in the company's own 2,000-metre-deep test borehole, proving that the innovative pipe handler works perfectly. Thomas Huber: "The entire system can be operated by two people, who are accommodated in a comfortable cabin: One monitors the drilling progress, the other the pipe handler."
Bauer is breaking new ground with the TBA 440 M2, and "breaking new ground" is meant quite literally. This is because the rig, which weighs up to 1000 tonnes, is designed as a "walking unit". This means that it can move around the drilling site independently - together with the pipe handler and 6000 metres of drill pipe - and thus drill several holes without having to be dismantled and reassembled. For exploration companies, this makes drilling work considerably easier and faster. It is therefore not surprising that Bauer is registering great interest in the TBA 440 M2. The first rig has already been sold to South America and there are enquiries for others from North America and elsewhere.
